At Vestibular Technologies "helping people regain their balance" has become not just a mission but a passion.

Since 1996 we have been helping doctors recognize patients with balance problems. From the elderly at risk of falling to the athlete with a possible concussion, the CAPS® systems can help identify a problem when, in many cases, other methods cannot.

Many neurological, vestibular, and postural problems never present any obvious symptoms to patients. If a patient has no complaints they are, much too often, not examined. Which brings about the basic premise of our philosophy - You can't help a balance patient if you don't know who they are. Our ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for those who have balance problems as well as those at risk of having balance problems.

Our CAPS® line of specialized posturography products is perfect for those clinicians who want to not only screen, assess and diagnose balance disorder/falls-risk patients, but also provide effective rehabilitation for them, because the highly sensitive force platforms and proprietary software used by our CAPS® systems provide much greater insight into a patient's balance problems than ever before possible.

You can't help balance patients if you don't know who they are.

Our history

We started in 1996 as a medical products distributor, marketing products manufactured by others. In 2001, having realized that better products were needed, we decided to shift our focus to the research, development and manufacturing of our own innovative, patented products - products that would offer significant advances and that would not be available anywhere else in the world. In 2002 we obtained our Establishment Registration from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and began manufacturing our new series of FDA Listed, USB powered products. And in 2003 we relocated our headquarters, R&D, and manufacturing services to Wyoming.

Our expertise spans a variety of fields – not only engineering, medicine and business, but through our extensive network of consultants, and such other fields as regulatory and compliance issues, legal, sales and marketing, allowing us to provide assistance to our customers all over the world.

Our team members are willing and able to fulfill different roles and to successfully apply their knowledge and expertise to what are often new challenges, and are capable of working either independently or in collaboration with others.

We are especially proud of our R&D and manufacturing team, which is comprised of individuals with Ph.D. Degrees who are experts in the Mechanical Engineering and Biomechanics field, as well as in all aspects of force measuring instrumentation (including sensor, electronics and software) design and manufacturing. Their knowhow is reflected in the superior quality, state of the art, "high tech" features and great value of our products and services. And during the years we have developed, through a lot of "trial and error", an extensive network of consultants whose expertise we can draw on when necessary.

Our key personnel

Bob Henderson, J.D. – Owner, Founder & Managing Partner
Founder of Vestibular Technologies, his vision is what has driven the company to concentrate originally on fall prevention, realizing back in 1998 that many neurological, vestibular, and postural problems never present any obvious symptoms to patients: if a patient has no complaints they are, much too often, not examined, and they are not helped and treated. Therefore, he was the first to push for a fall prevention program based on fast and reliable balance screening. With him, "helping people regain their balance" has become not just a mission but a passion. Over the past several years, he has been involved with several different patents and innovations, including a process by which vestibular therapy can be delivered via the Internet and another process by which coal can be reclaimed from discarded waste materials. In charge of administration and sales, he brings a strong business background to the company, having run a drug store business, a furniture store business, a software business, a coal reclamation business, and a petroleum sales business.

Elena Oggero, Ph.D. – Owner , VP R&D and Quality Control Manager
An Italian engineer who, after graduating from the Politecnico di Torino (Italy), got her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University. She is also Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Wyoming (Laramie, WY), and Professor of Biomechanical Engineering at the Carrick Institute for Graduate Studies (Cape Canaveral, FL), Member of the Board of Examiners of the American Board of Vestibular Rehabilitation – American College of Functional Neurology (Cocoa, FL), and co-chair of the Rocky Mountain Bioengineering Symposium (RMBS) Contest. Winner of several awards, including the University of Wyoming Women of Distinction Award (2012), the President's Award for significant contributions to the RMBS (2009) and three RMBS – K.C. Rock Student Contest awards (1998, 1999, and 2000), her main interests are Functional Neurology (with special emphasis on the consequences of injuries/neurological deficits on brain function), Biomechanics (human locomotion and postural control), Mechanical Engineering (sensors and transducers design, car safety and crashworthiness, Quality system control), and Computer Science (software documentation, medical user oriented software interface design, mathematical modeling of biological systems). She has written several book chapters and more than 50 papers on these topics, and holds the title to 4 US patents. She is also a member of the Review Board for Gait & Posture and Biomedical Sciences Instrumentation journals.

Guido Pagnacco, Ph.D. – Owner & VP Engineering
He graduated summa cum laude from the Politecnico di Torino (Italy) with a combined BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering and obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University while being the Technical director of the Human Performance Laboratory, division of Physical Therapy, School of Allied Medical Professions - The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He is also Adjunct Professor at the University of Wyoming (Laramie, WY), Professor of Biomechanical Engineering at the Carrick Institute for Graduate Studies (Cape Canaveral, FL), Visiting Scholar at the Università degli Studi di Udine, Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile e Architettura (Udine, Italy), Member of the Board of Examiners of the American Board of Vestibular Rehabilitation – American College of Functional Neurology (Cocoa, FL), and co-chair of the Rocky Mountain Bioengineering Symposium (RMBS) Contest. Winner of several awards, including the President's Award for significant contributions to the RMBS (2009) and three RMBS - K.C. Rock Student Contest awards (1998, 1999, and 2000), his main interests include Biomechanics (human locomotion and postural control), Neuro-Physiology (neuromuscular control and brain function), Computer Science (software design and engineering, data acquisition, signal analysis, numerical methods, mathematical modeling of biological systems), and Mechanical Engineering (sensors and transducers design, car safety and crashworthiness). He is a member of the Review Board for the following journals: Biomedical Signal Processing and Control, Medical Engineering & Physics, IEEE Sensors Journal, Journal of Biomechanics (2014 recognized reviewer), Gait & Posture (2015 outstanding reviewer), Biomedical Sciences Instrumentation and Neuroscience Letters, has written several book chapters and more than 50 papers on these topics, and holds the title to 4 US patents.

Where we fit in the market for surgical and medical instruments

We are a very small company that has occupied a very small niche. We have been marketing our products to specialists like audiologists, chiropractors, chiropractic neurologists, neurologists, otolaryngologists, physical therapists and balance centers, because balance disorders have traditionally been considered a specialty field.

But the fact is that balance disorders are extremely common, affecting probably more than 2/3 of the elderly population and 1/2 of the general adult population. It is safe to say that in everybody's family one or more persons have suffered the consequences of a balance problem or a fall. The costs associated with falls and balance problems are enormous since, as according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than half of the elderly that are injured as a consequence of a fall are either confined to a nursing home or dead within a year. And things will get even worse as the average age of our nation's population continues to increase.

Although balance disorders and fall prevention are getting more and more attention, we still must contend with a major issue: the lack of familiarity and education of most medical personnel on the topics of balance disorders and fall prevention. Most physicians continue to believe that falls and poor balance are a natural consequence of aging, medications and diseases, and that little can be done to improve a person's balance and reduce their risk of falls. They are not trained in determining the cause of a balance deficit and are ill prepared to decide on an effective treatment. Most often, they refer their balance disorder patients to specialists. But this is not how it should be: almost anything going on in a person's body affects balance. In short, to reduce the risk of falls and improve balance every clinician should start thinking about how their patient's condition and therapy is affecting their balance now, and how it will affect it in the future.
